It could be argued that basketball is essentially a universal language. In any part of the world, it is likely that you will see a basketball court in every community. Furthermore, most people will have at least some knowledge of teams that range from the Los Angeles Lakers or even the Golden State Warriors. Pop culture aside, basketball is also a great way to build a consistent fitness routine you will actually enjoy.
How much exercise should we be getting?
Medical professionals recommend that a person should get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week or 75 minutes for more demanding activities. It is also suggested that one undergo strength training to stimulate the different muscle groups at least twice a week.
How does basketball work?
It begins with people being sorted into two teams consisting of five active players who try to score in the opposing team’s 10-foot net. In short, the team with the highest number of points wins the game. Although there are many other rules governing the game that relate to the size of the court or lengths of a game, one just needs a ball and a hoop to get started. Even without other players, one could learn how to shoot and dribble on their own. And with the ubiquity of the game, one could easily join a team later on and get a healthy dose of competition.
The benefits of basketball
-
Burning calories: Not only fun, basketball is a great form of activity. Just one hour can burn anywhere from 630 to 750 calories. All the running, jumping, and passing ensures that the whole body is engaged.
-
Building strength: Apart from the constant movement, the ball itself serves as a good form of resistance for the muscles. Moving it back and forth to a teammate or shooting it in the hoop activates the muscles in the arms.
-
Improving concentration and coordination: Moving around the court to successfully score in the opposing net takes a lot of concentration. The quick decision making and synchronized movements from playing basketball can therefore help build one’s sense of focus and coordination.
-
Preventing diseases: Engaging in physical activity enhances high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which is the good kind of cholesterol. The increase in such lowers the triglycerides in one’s body which can decrease the risk of various cardiovascular diseases and keeps the blood flowing smoothly.
-
Improving mood: Playing basketball causes the brain to release hormones such as endorphins which can make one feel happier, less heavy, and more relaxed.
-
Promoting better sleep: Routine exercise has also been proven to help one fall asleep faster and even improve sleep quality.
-
Boosting energy: Partaking in exercise like basketball improves the functions of the heart and lungs which are responsible for one’s energy levels. When these organs function optimally, more oxygen and nutrients can be sent to one’s tissues.
-
Fostering a sense of community: Basketball is a great way to branch out of one’s social circle and interact with other people who also enjoy the game. In addition, playing in teams to accomplish a common goal can instill a sense of teamwork and sportsmanship.
